[The last event left Cheyenne in a weird place and since then, she's been rather scarce around the village. Aside from getting food at one of the village restaurants, she's spent most of her time either in her apartment or in the forests just outside the village. Today, she's actually back to her usual spot: sitting on the edge of one of Luceti's many bridges, looking down at the water.]

[A few hours of this goes by until she finally opens her journal and poses a question to the residents. The very thing that's been on her mind all this time.]

It is not uncommon for others to ask questions using these journals, yes? [A pause. She wasn't really expecting an answer to that.]

...what do you think it means to be a "person"?

To act humane.

I think it means something different to everyone. How you define yourself as a person wouldn't necessarily be how I do.

[Ooh! Hiccup loved these kind of questions. The ones that really made him think. He starts vocalizing his thoughts before realizing he's speaking.]

Iiii guess a lot of people would call a person a human being, but...I don't know, I don't think that's necessarily always the case. I mean, Toothless is a dragon, and he's...just like a person. He's got a personality, and a heart...likes and dislikes--oh, that reminds me I need to go pick up some fresh fish for him, and...

I think that a person is any individual or collective-being who possesses sapience, by Terran definition. A person does not have to look, act like, resemble or in any way emulate a human to be a person - a common misconception by those of my own species.

Additionally, there are many kinds of sapience; not all of them are human-like. In fact, many kinds of sapience are much different from human sapience.

[As an astrobiologist - and the boyfriend of a non-human sapient - these questions are extremely important to him.]

If it understands that it exists, it is a person.

To love, or be capable of such.

[She really is just reciting that from her database, but... well, it is the definition she's familiar with.]

Does it matter?

A-a person is someone with hopes and dreams, feelings, a heart and spirit. I-it doesn't matter what they look like on the outside; what species they are. Anyone or anything that can think enough to have hope deserves to be called a person.

...y'know, I've never really thought about it.

[one of the bridges, you say? Aella might just pass by there on her way back to the village, a bag of plant cuttings at her side. She pauses, though, upon seeing a blindfolded girl sitting... on a bridge. Above the river.]
